Member share, twelve weeks
Two hundred and six more owners than this time last year, and a smaller share of the till. Both are true and only one of them gets reported at the annual meeting. The roll is growing at the desk and shrinking at the checkout, which is a different problem from the one a sign-up target solves.
The hairline is the same week last year. The line has been under it for the whole quarter.

The basket figures, and why they are not an argument
- Member basket
- $38.20
- Non-member basket
- $19.40
- Transactions
- 3,836 / 3,490
A member basket is nearly twice a non-member basket, and this is the figure that gets quoted to prove membership works. It does not prove that. People who already do their whole week’s shop here are the people who join; the basket is most of the reason for the membership rather than the result of it. Reading it the other way round would have us buying sign-ups to raise a number that was always going to be high. Whether membership changes what somebody spends is a before-and-after question about the same person, and this store does not currently have the data to answer it.
