Which empty hours do we discount before they expire, and which ones stay empty on purpose?

257 h booked · 269 h open · 104 h never for sale

Hands-on · Press a held block to release it, or a block marked Ring once you have offered it to somebody. Releasing a hold makes occupancy read lower, because the hour joins the hours you have to sell — that is the arithmetic, and it is why holds survive. Kept for this browser tab.

Six rooms, seven days · Day 10–17 · Evening 17–22 · Late 22–01

Six rooms down, seven days across. Each cell holds the day, evening and late blocks, marked booked with the band, held with the rule that closed it, or open. Open blocks inside forty-eight hours that may be discounted are marked.

Booked

257 of 526 h

49% of the hours that were for sale — the held hours are out of the denominator, not counted as failures

Still worth a call

10 of 10 blocks

$984 at list, inside forty-eight hours, and worth nothing on Wednesday

The only hours on this screen anybody can still do something about.

Open and not expiring

239 h

$7,802 at list, three days out or more — left alone deliberately

Discounting these teaches the term bands that waiting is cheaper than booking.

Taken this week

$7,414

against $3,120 of list value in hours we will never sell at any price

When an empty hour gets discounted

  1. 1Only inside forty-eight hours. Past that, a discount is a lesson that waiting is cheaper than booking, and the term bands learn it in about a month.
  2. 2Never the weekday evening block. It sells itself, and cutting it moves a booking that was already coming at full price.
  3. 3Never below the room below it. A Room 1 at Room 5's price makes Room 5 unsellable for the rest of the week.
  4. 4Held hours are not discountable at any price. They are not empty, they are closed.
  5. 5The discount is offered by a person, on the phone, to somebody who has booked before. It is not published.

An open hour at 22:00 on Wednesday is worth its list price on Tuesday and nothing at all on Thursday. Everything on this list is about the difference between those two days.

Why the held hours are out of the denominator

49% of the hours that were for sale went. Against every hour in the building it is 41, and those 8 points are a decision rather than a performance. Sunday mornings are not unsold, they are a signed agreement with two neighbours. Room 4 during a session is not unsold either — selling it is how you refund two bookings at once.

So the held hours come out, and they get their own screen with what each one costs. Buried in a denominator they would look like a failure to sell; on their own they look like what they are, which is a bill this building has decided to pay.

No discount is shown on this screen, and that is deliberate. What the hour goes for is decided on the call, against who is asking and what they booked last — a printed percentage would be taken as the price by everybody who works here inside a fortnight.
