Diagnostic visit, any hour
$135
(316) 555-0157Nobody here earns a cent more for selling you a furnace.
Every technician is on salary. No commission, no manufacturer spiff, no bonus tied to what a truck sold this week. The diagnostic fee is the same at two in the afternoon and two on Christmas morning, and there is no after-hours rate.

Diagnostic visit
One flat fee. It covers finding the fault and telling you what it will cost to fix. It is the same at 2pm on a Tuesday and at 2am on Christmas Day.
- $0 extra
Nights, weekends and holidays
There is no after-hours rate. Every other shop in this town has one and we have never been able to explain to a customer why the same work costs more because their furnace chose a bad night.
- $135
Second opinion on somebody else's quote
The diagnostic fee, and it is refunded in full if you end up having us do the work. Bring the quote — we will tell you whether it is fair, including when it is.
- $189
Annual maintenance, per system
One visit, flat, no plan and no subscription. Two systems in the same house is $310.
Repair or replace: do the sum yourself.
Age in years × repair costover $5,000 → replace
This is the rule we use, printed so you can check our answer before anybody is standing in your basement. It is a rule of thumb and there are three cases where it is wrong — those are on the next page, next to it, rather than left for us to mention afterwards.
The three exceptions| Example | Age | Repair | Product | Says |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eight-year-old furnace, capacitor | 8 | $185 | $1,480 | Repair |
| Twelve-year-old furnace, blower motor | 12 | $640 | $7,680 | Replace |
| Fourteen-year-old furnace, ignitor and a flame sensor | 14 | $420 | $5,880 | Replace |
| Sixteen-year-old furnace, control board | 16 | $620 | $9,920 | Replace |
| Eighteen-year-old air conditioner, compressor | 18 | $1,900 | $34,200 | Replace |
| Twenty-two-year-old furnace, heat exchanger | 22 | $1,800 | $39,600 | Replace |

One sentence about carbon monoxide, and that is all of it.
We test for it on every visit and we will tell you what the meter says. If a heat exchanger is cracked we will not repair it at any age and we will say so plainly. That is the entire subject and we are not going to use it to sell anybody a maintenance plan, which is what it is normally for.
