Exceptions

What has to be resolved before the file locks at 16:00 Tuesday, and what gets paid exactly as it stands?

7.5 hours to the cut-off · file locks Tue 4 Aug, 16:00 · pays Fri 7 Aug

Hands-on · Every row takes one of three answers. Payroll can mark its own lines fixed; on somebody else’s it can only chase or let it pay. Chasing never unlocks the file, because it is not a decision. Kept for this tab.

How an exception is handled

  1. 1Nobody is paid less because of an exception. A missing clock-out pays the scheduled hours and is flagged; the correction goes on the next run, in whichever direction it falls.
  2. 2Every line prints what it pays untouched. The default is what actually happens, so it is the thing on the screen.
  3. 3Only two kinds block the file: no bank details, and a court order not yet applied. Both are things that cannot be defaulted safely in either direction.
  4. 4The cut-off is 16:00 Tuesday and it does not move. Anything open at 16:00 pays its default, silently, and appears on next week's list.
  5. 5No figure on this tool describes anybody's performance. Hours are a payroll input and never a score.

The first rule is the load-bearing one. Withholding pay until a timesheet is corrected is a policy that works — it gets timesheets corrected fast — and it is wage theft with a workflow around it.

Why most rows have no “fixed” button

9 of these 15 are somebody else’s to answer — a supervisor who knows whether Feyi was in the building, an operations manager who has to own six hours of overtime. Payroll marking those fixed would record a decision this desk did not make, so on those rows the button is not there.

What is there instead is the truth: chase it, or say out loud that you are letting it pay as it stands. Both are things payroll may actually do. It is slower than a resolve button and it is the only version where the record is true afterwards.

The one that should not be here at all

E-2268 is a midnight split on a shift Norbert Achike works every single week, and it has been raised and cleared eleven times. Eleven identical decisions is not an exception, it is a rule nobody has written down — and a queue that never asks which of its lines are recurring will regenerate this one for ever.

Every exception · blocking first, then by what is at stake

  • 5 missing clock-out
  • 3 overtime over the line
  • 2 rate changed mid-week
  • 1 no bank details
  • 2 shift across midnight
  • 1 final pay
  • 1 court order not applied
Every exception with its kind, the employee and site, what is wrong, what it pays if nobody touches it before the cut-off, the amount at stake, and who can clear it.

Answered this morning

0 of 15 · the tick is the 2 that have to go, not all of them

2 of the 2 that stop the file are still undecided: E-2261, E-2274.

Must be cleared

2

of 15 exceptions — the only 2 that stop the file being sent

A new starter with no account, and a court order not yet applied. Everything else pays something.

Have a safe default

13

every one of them pays, correctly or nearly so, if this desk does nothing at all today

Still at stake

$1,464

against a gross run of $130,186 — it started at $1,464, most of it in two lines, and $486 of it is one person's whole week

Waiting on somebody else

9 of 15

supervisors, operations and the scheduler — payroll cannot clear these and chasing them is most of Tuesday
